Radiation safety and dose reduction
For the radiologist to make an accurate diagnosis of your condition, an imaging study using radiation (X-rays) or radioactive materials may be necessary. Most exams carry a very low risk from radiation, and the benefit of having the procedure outweighs the very small risks associated with radiation exposure.
Salem Health thinks seriously about choosing the appropriate exam to diagnose your condition in the most effective and safest method. Whether you are having an X-ray procedure or a procedure where you are administered radioactive materials, you can rest assured that your safety and comfort are our priority.
Expertise and dose-reduction technology
Salem Health is dedicated to providing high-quality imaging at the lowest possible radiation dose to the patient. We have nationally certified technologists, and American Board of Radiology (ABR) certified radiologists and medical physicists.
Our CT scanners employ low-dose detector technology (ASiR) and all X-ray and fluoroscopy machines are equipped with low dose settings and automatic exposure control to optimize patient dose while preserving superior image quality.
The Salem Health Imaging Department is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) in CT, Nuclear Medicine, PET, Mammography, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, Breast MRI, and Breast Ultrasound. We are currently in the process of obtaining additional accreditation for our MRI scanners.
Salem Health is an ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and ACR Designated Lung Cancer Screening Center.
Salem Health takes radiation exposure to pediatric patients seriously. Our protocols are tailored to children to ensure a fast and high quality exam at a low dose. Salem Health has pledged to the Image Gently campaign, which focuses on dose-reduction strategies and practices for children. We also work with our pediatric providers to help ensure parents of children are educated and given peace of mind when their child needs to have a radiation exam.
